The Fireside Jacket

Choose the size nearest the wearer's actual chest measurement (round the fullest part, under the arms). The pattern adds the ease the original design had.
The original: Heavy (Aran) wool, at about 20 sts and 24 rows to 4 in (10 cm) over the rib-and-cable pattern. For the closest match to the photo, use a yarn that knits to this gauge. Yarn thicker than about 15 sts to 4 in (10 cm) isn't offered: the cables and the double front get too bulky. Anything finer than DK isn't offered: it stops being a jacket.
Your gauge
This one needs a swatch. Please measure your gauge over the rib-and-cable pattern itself (the pattern shows you how to knit the swatch), not plain stockinette: the rib draws the knitting in. The gauge on a yarn label is measured over plain stockinette, and this stitch pattern knits up differently, so the label won't give you the right size.
This pattern can be written for 15 to 24 stitches per 4 in (10 cm). How to measure your gauge
