Choose the size nearest the wearer's actual chest measurement (round the fullest part, under the arms). The pattern adds the ease the original design had.
The original: A soft worsted-type wool knitted firmly, at about 28 sts and 40 rows to 4 in (10 cm) over the trellis pattern. For the closest match to the photo, use a yarn that knits to this gauge. Nothing thicker than Aran is offered: the travelling stitches turn stiff and the trellis loses its neat ovals.
Your gauge
This one needs a swatch. Please measure your gauge over the trellis pattern itself (the pattern shows you how to knit the swatch), laid flat and lightly blocked, not plain stockinette: the travelling stitches draw the knitting in. The gauge on a yarn label is measured over plain stockinette, and this stitch pattern knits up differently, so the label won't give you the right size.
This pattern can be written for 20 to 34 stitches per 4 in (10 cm). How to measure your gauge
