Choose the size nearest the wearer's actual chest measurement (round the fullest part, under the arms). The pattern adds the ease the original design had.
The original: Worsted (Aran) wool, at about 20 sts and 28 rows to 4 in (10 cm) over stockinette. For the closest match to the photo, use a yarn that knits to this gauge. True bulky (chunky) yarn isn't offered: the double-moss lapels and collar get too thick to turn back. A light chunky down to about 16 sts to 4 in (10 cm) is fine. Anything finer than DK isn't offered: it stops being a jacket.
Your gauge Not a swatcher? Most of us aren't! Just enter the gauge printed on your yarn's label (most labels give stitches and rows over 4 in or 10 cm). It's a good starting point, and the pattern gives you measurements to check against as you go. Want it to fit perfectly? Knit a swatch, wash it, let it dry and measure it over plain stockinette (stocking stitch) on your main needles: the back, sleeves and side fronts are stockinette.
This pattern can be written for 16 to 24 stitches per 4 in (10 cm). How to measure your gauge
