Choose the size nearest the wearer's actual chest measurement (round the fullest part, under the arms). The pattern adds the ease the original design had.
The original: Fingering (4-ply) wool, at about 30 sts and 40 rows to 4 in (10 cm) over the k4 p2 rib. For the closest match to the photo, use a yarn that knits to this gauge. Nothing thicker than DK is offered: a bulky rib loses the crisp tennis look and the cut-in armholes get clumsy.
Your gauge
This one needs a swatch. Please measure your gauge over the k4 p2 rib pattern itself (purl 2, knit 4), laid flat and lightly blocked, not stretched. The whole body is knitted in this rib. The gauge on a yarn label is measured over plain stockinette, and this stitch pattern knits up differently, so the label won't give you the right size.
This pattern can be written for 20 to 34 stitches per 4 in (10 cm). How to measure your gauge
