The Country Weekend Cardigan

rewritten for your size, yarn and gauge

A roomy mid-1980s edge-to-edge cardigan for country walks. A band of travelling cables runs up the back and down each front: two diamonds, each with a bobble at its heart, round a pair of plaited centre cables, all set in reverse stockinette. Rounded front hems, one rib band all the way round, a rib collar and ribbed cuffs. It fastens at the top with a plaited figure-of-eight loop.

Fit
Easy and roomy, about 12 in (31 cm) of ease at the bust; edge-to-edge fronts
Skill level
Experienced. Travelling cables, diamonds and bobbles, worked from a chart.
Sizes
US 4 to 24 (UK 8 to 28, EU 36 to 56): 32 to 52 in (81 to 132 cm) bust
Yarns
Bulky / chunky, Worsted / Aran
Original yarn
A heavy worsted (Aran), almost bulky, at about 16 sts and 21 rows to 4 in (10 cm) over reverse stockinette. For the closest match to the photo, use a yarn that knits to this gauge.
Gauge
Your own, from 14 to 19 stitches per 4 in (10 cm)
You get
Your complete pattern straight away, to read on screen, print or save, plus an email link back to it

Super bulky yarn isn't offered (the cables and bobbles turn coarse and the front panels swamp the smaller sizes), and nor is anything finer than worsted (Aran): the cable panels shrink to a narrow strip and the cosy look is lost.

What you'll get

  • Every piece written out in full for your size and gauge
  • Row counts with the length to check against, so you always know where you are
  • Row-by-row planners for the tricky bits, where shaping happens on both edges at once
  • Drawings of each piece with your measurements, and full making-up instructions

Every design is chosen by a knitter and checked against its original pattern. If you get stuck, email us and a real person will help.

No swatch? You can use the gauge on your yarn's label. For a perfect fit, knit a swatch and measure it over reverse stockinette (the purl side of stockinette) on your main needles. Here's how to measure your gauge.
