Choose the size nearest your actual bust measurement. The pattern adds the ease the original design had.
The original: A heavy worsted (Aran), almost bulky, at about 16 sts and 21 rows to 4 in (10 cm) over reverse stockinette. For the closest match to the photo, use a yarn that knits to this gauge. Super bulky yarn isn't offered (the cables and bobbles turn coarse and the front panels swamp the smaller sizes), and nor is anything finer than worsted (Aran): the cable panels shrink to a narrow strip and the cosy look is lost.
Your gauge Not a swatcher? Most of us aren't! Just enter the gauge printed on your yarn's label (most labels give stitches and rows over 4 in or 10 cm). It's a good starting point, and the pattern gives you measurements to check against as you go. Want it to fit perfectly? Knit a swatch, wash it, let it dry and measure it over reverse stockinette (the purl side of stockinette) on your main needles. The cable panels are worked over a fixed number of stitches and come out a little narrower, as in the original.
This pattern can be written for 14 to 19 stitches per 4 in (10 cm). How to measure your gauge
