The Yuppie Henley

rewritten for your size, yarn and gauge

A roomy 1980s men's Henley sweater, knitted all over in an easy chevron pattern: two-stitch knit chevrons stacked up a purl background. Straight, dropped shoulders over a small square notch at the underarm, sleeves picked up round the armhole and knitted down to deep ribbed cuffs, and a deep ribbed welt. A front opening with two ribbed tabs, two buttons on the left as on a man's shirt, and a ribbed round neckband. Men's sizes, chest 34 to 54 in.

Fit
Roomy, as the original: about 4.5 in (11.5 cm) of ease at the chest; hip length
Skill level
Intermediate. An easy knit-and-purl chevron with every row written out, a front opening with tick-off planners for the neck, sleeves picked up and knitted down, and two ribbed tabs with buttonholes.
Sizes
Men's, chest 34 to 54 in (86 to 137 cm): S to 3XL (UK/US 34 to 54, EU 44 to 64)
Yarns
Worsted / Aran, Bulky / chunky, DK / light worsted
Original yarn
Off-white Aran-weight wool, at about 19 sts and 24 rows to 4 in (10 cm) over the chevron pattern. For the closest match to the photo, use a yarn that knits to this gauge.
Gauge
Your own, from 15.5 to 24 stitches per 4 in (10 cm)
You get
Your complete pattern straight away, to read on screen, print or save, plus an email link back to it

Yarn thicker than about 15.5 sts to 4 in (10 cm) isn't offered, and anything finer than DK isn't either: the chevrons get too big or too small and it stops being this sweater.

What you'll get

  • Every piece written out in full for your size and gauge
  • Row counts with the length to check against, so you always know where you are
  • Row-by-row planners for the tricky bits, where shaping happens on both edges at once
  • Drawings of each piece with your measurements, and full making-up instructions

Every design is chosen by a knitter and checked against its original pattern. If you get stuck, email us and a real person will help.

This one needs a swatch. Please measure your gauge over the chevron pattern itself (the pattern shows you how), not plain stockinette: the purl background draws the knitting in a little. A yarn label's gauge is for plain stockinette, so it won't give the right size here. Here's how to measure your gauge.
